Domestic Abuse Victims - How to turn off Emergency Alerts on your phone to stay safe

The Government will test a nationwide emergency alert system on people's phones at 3 pm on Sunday, the 23rd of April. The alert will last approximately 10 seconds and still sound even if the phone is on silent.

Domestic violence charities have shared concerns that the alert may endanger people suffering from domestic violence. The alert may reveal the victim's hidden phone to abusers, who could confiscate it, eliminating vital communication with friends, family and organisations trying to help.

How to disable the alert

If you or someone you know is suffering from domestic abuse, it's essential to turn the emergency alert off to keep the phone concealed for safety reasons. Refuge Charity has published a short video showing how to disable the alert system on Android and iPhone.
