Family Mediation Week: Highlighting the Importance of Mediation for Separating Parents

This Family Mediation Week, which runs from the 27th to the 31st of January, we’re encouraging parents going through separation to explore the supportive and peaceful option of family mediation, helping to avoid courtroom stress and find a better way forward together.

Organised by the Family Mediation Council (FMC), a not-for-profit organisation, Family Mediation Week seeks to raise awareness about how mediation can help separating couples resolve disputes over parenting, finances, and property - without the stress, cost, and delays associated with court proceedings.

The period following Christmas often sees a rise in separations, as the pressures of the festive season act as a catalyst for many couples deciding to part ways.

Sam Miles, Partner and Accredited Family Mediator at Warner Goodman LLP, underscores the importance of this initiative: “Family Mediation Week provides an invaluable opportunity to shine a spotlight on the benefits of mediation. It’s a process designed to help separating couples reach agreements tailored to their unique circumstances, without resorting to courtroom confrontation.”

Sam continues: “Following the holiday period, many parents find themselves grappling with the challenges of separation. They are often faced with difficult and pressing questions, such as:

  • Who lives where?
  • Where will the children live, and how will we ensure quality time with each parent?
  • How do we divide finances, debts, or pensions?
  • What happens to shared responsibilities like pets?

“Family mediation offers a structured, supportive environment where an independent, professionally trained mediator helps parents work through these issues. By focusing on collaboration, mediation empowers families to create long-term solutions that prioritise everyone’s well-being, especially the children.”
